In an increasingly unstable and dangerous world, we need effective diplomacy to secure peace agreements, end conflict and find solutions to urgent crises like climate change. We need the international system to work. But the diplomatic system is not designed to be effective. In fact, it routinely excludes those most affected by its decisions. At the UN, EU and other institutions, only states get a say and the powerful dominate. This is the problem that Independent Diplomat (ID) is fixing. Using our diplomatic expertise, we advise and support democratic groups – opposition movements and those fighting oppression – and we help democratic but smaller governments whose needs have been sidelined. ID is rewriting the rules of diplomacy and revolutionising the system and in doing so ensuring that those with most at stake get a seat at the table.
