About
Dorcas was founded by Dutch entrepreneur Dirk-Jan Groot in 1980. Groot was inspired by a foundation that supported Eastern Europeans who were persecuted for their religious beliefs during the Cold War. In the 1990s, the organisation expanded its activities to Africa - and, in the last decade, to the Middle East. For those in need! Dorcas is active in Eastern Europe, Eastern Africa and the Middle East. Local colleagues lead our 14 country offices. We invest in resilient communities in which everyone can participate. We support over one million people annually. When a disaster or a crisis occurs, we provide humanitarian assistance and support communities to rebuild themselves. At the same time, we invest in structural solutions for poverty and social exclusion. In our work we are accountable, compassionate, determined and locally led. In the Netherlands, Dorcas is a movement comprising of tens of thousands of people, all making their contribution. Dorcas also has several thrift shops offering high-quality second-hand goods, such as clothes, books and furniture. The shops are run by volunteers. Together with our enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers, partners, churches, donors, employees and those who support us in their prayers, we support those in need.
