On 3 June 2020, the United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 2524 (2020), establishing the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), a special political mission, to provide support to Sudan for an initial 12-month period during its political transition to democratic rule. On 3 June 2021, the Security Council adopted resolution 2579 (2021) extending the mandate of UNITAMS for a further 12 months, until 3 June 2022. On 3 June 2022, the Security Council renewed UNITAMS mandate for an additional year until 3 June 2023, according to resolution 2636 (2022). The Security Council on 1 December 2023 decided to terminate the mandate of UNITAMS under resolution 2579 (2021) and begin winding down its operations over a three-month period slated to end on 29 February 2024. The resolution 2715 (2023) asks the Mission to begin the cessation of its operations on 4 December 2023.
